What drives DI water service cost?

There's no single price for DI tank exchange service — the right number depends on your facility's water volume, feed quality, purity target, and service frequency. Understanding the five cost drivers lets you design a program that fits your budget.

Tank size & resin volume

Larger resin beds hold more ion exchange capacity — they cost more per swap, but produce significantly more high-purity water per exchange. Matching tank size to your actual demand is the key to minimizing cost per litre.

Feed water TDS

Resin capacity is consumed by dissolved ions. High-TDS feed water (hard well water, municipal water with elevated chlorides) exhausts resin faster — meaning more frequent swaps and higher monthly cost. RO pretreatment can reduce this dramatically.

Target purity

A rinse line that needs 50,000 ohm-cm is different from a lab that needs 18 MegOhm. Higher purity targets typically require a mixed-bed polisher as a second stage, which adds to program cost — but is essential for the right applications.

What resistivity should I target? →

Service frequency

More swaps per month means higher total cost. The most cost-effective programs are designed so tanks are exchanged when exhausted — not on a fixed calendar. Real-time conductivity monitoring prevents both over-servicing and quality failures.

Typical cost ranges in Ontario

These ranges reflect common scenarios for Ontario facilities served by Eclipse. Your actual cost depends on a site assessment — but these figures give a realistic starting point.

Application Typical Tank Size Estimated Cost per Swap Notes
Small lab or dental office 1–3 cubic foot mixed-bed $100 – $250 Low volume, infrequent swaps
Medium lab or light industrial 3–6 cubic foot mixed-bed $200 – $450 Monthly or bi-monthly service typical
Industrial rinse line or CNC 6–15 cubic foot cation/anion + polish $400 – $900 Frequency depends on TDS and volume
Hospital or high-purity process 15+ cubic foot multi-vessel $600 – $1,500+ Multi-tank systems, tight purity specs

How to reduce your DI service cost

Add RO pretreatment

Reverse osmosis upstream of your DI tanks removes 90–99% of dissolved solids before the resin sees them. This can extend resin life 5–15x. In high-volume or hard-water facilities, RO pretreatment typically pays for itself within 1–2 years through reduced swap frequency.

Right-size your tanks

Oversized tanks cost more per swap for no gain. Undersized tanks get exhausted too quickly, increasing service frequency. The SDI sizing calculator helps you find the right capacity based on your actual usage data.

Monitor in real time

A simple inline conductivity or resistivity meter pays for itself quickly. Without monitoring, facilities either swap too early (wasting resin capacity) or too late (running out-of-spec water through their process). Monitoring also lets you track trends that signal feed water changes or system problems early.

Frequently asked questions — DI water pricing

How much does DI water service cost in Ontario?
A small mixed-bed tank exchange for light industrial or lab use typically runs $100–$300 per swap. Larger industrial tanks range from $300–$900+ depending on resin volume, feed TDS, and frequency. Contact us for a site-specific quote.

Is DI service cheaper than buying bottled DI water?
Yes — for most industrial volumes, in-line DI service costs a fraction of bottled or bulk delivered DI water. At any meaningful scale, the per-litre cost of exchange service is dramatically lower.

Are there hidden costs in DI water contracts?
Some providers charge fuel surcharges, freight premiums, or minimum-usage penalties. Eclipse uses transparent, flat pricing with no cross-border freight charges — all regeneration happens locally in Ontario.

Can I save money with RO pretreatment?
Yes. RO before DI tanks extends resin life 5–15x and reduces swap frequency. The equipment cost is typically recovered in 12–24 months for facilities with high volume or hard feed water.
